They say change is constant. And that seemed to be the only thing that was lacking in a Bengali's political life. 34 years of Leftist rule seemed to have taken a toll on all the people of West Bengal, who now craved for some kind of alternative to this 'tyrannical' rule. 'Paribartan' was the new mantra. Change is what everyone now sought, prayed for and organised a multitude of rallies and bandhs for. And such was the strength of the mantra that it propelled a simple, saree-clad, lowtown middle aged woman from Kalighat area, who by this time, was anything but what I just said about her, to the highest corridors, in all the three tiers of power - state, nation and the world. She became the Bong Identity overnight. The world gazed at her. A woman, who drove out the Tatas from the state, fought for farmer's rights, assumed Gandhi-esque proportions when she went on a hunger strike, endorsed the intelligentsia of the state, spoke of better days, promised a thousand changes, organised and led massive rallies, claimed to speak for the people, all under the helpless eyes of the 'tyrannical' Communists, could not be just a woman.
She had to be the incarnation of something divvine, maybe a demigod.
The pro-change Bengalis couldn't have been happier. They finally got their flag-bearer. The Iron Lady of Bengal. 13th May, 2011 and the results showed and overwhelming win for the pro-change Bengalis. Songs were sung, colors were exchanged, crackers were fired. The woman, who completed a revolution, walked, ruled out any possibility of changing her residence, and rejected the convoy that was supposed to escort her everywhere she went. All seemed beautiful. The Reds had been pushed on to the brink of extinction, Rabindranath, Nazrul and Vivekananda were almost brought back to life through their quotes and thoughts, the foundation stones of a better and promising future had been laid. 'Maa, Mati and Manush' seemed to be the ideal road to prosperity.
An overwhelming majority of the Bengalis, and even hordes of supporters from all parts of the world cheered for her and identified themselves with this extraordinary woman.
She became the new face of Bengal.
The Bong Identity had now been baptized.
She had to be the incarnation of something divvine, maybe a demigod.
